Energy of Motion

In this unit, you'll become a motion detective, using one dramatic event as your case file: a car slams into a pole, and a crash-test dummy goes flying off the truck bed behind it. Along the way you'll learn how scientists describe motion, measure speed, and explain the forces and energy that make a crash so violent in the first place.

The big idea driving this unit

A car speeds down a road, crashes head-on into a pole, and crumples on impact — while a crash-test dummy strapped to the open truck bed behind it keeps sliding forward and flies off. Every topic in this unit helps explain a different piece of why that happens.
