Electricity & Magnetism

NGSS standards: MS-PS2-3MS-PS2-5MS-PS3-2

Some of the strongest forces in the universe never touch anything at all. In this unit you'll investigate the invisible fields around magnets, discover why a magnet grabs a steel paperclip but not a soda can, see how quickly that pull fades with distance, and figure out how flipping on an electric current can turn ordinary wire into a magnet you can switch on and off.

The big idea driving this unit

Magnets push or pull on each other and on iron without touching, through invisible fields that weaken with distance. Electric current in a coil of wire makes a magnetic field you can switch on and off, and moving a magnet near a coil makes current.
